On December 6, 2005 the Indiana Department of Insurance issued Bulletin 135 stating that “Any person who conducts a real estate closing on behalf of a title insurance producer or title insurance company in which a title insurance policy is issued or is to be issued must be a licensed insurance producer.” The Department is granting a six (6) month implementation period for insurers and individuals to implement this bulletin and to complete the licensure process. To obtain your Title Insurance Producers License, you must complete a 2 day 10 hour Pre-Licensing course. The dates and locations of these courses can be found on the Educational Seminar page of our website
The cost for the 2 day course is $295 for non-member of ILTA and $225 for members. Once you have completed the Pre-Licensing Course you will receive a Certificate of Completion. You must make a copy of that Certificate and send it along with your Individual Insurance Producer License application. This application is a uniform application designed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and does not list Title on page 2. Across from IN please just write the word Title and the IDOI will know you are applying for a Title Insurance license. After completing the application you will need to send it, your completion certificate and a check in the amount of $40 to the Indiana Department of Insurance, 311 W. Washington Street, Suite 300, Indianapolis, IN 46204. If you are a non-resident, the cost of the non-resident license is $90. You will receive your license from the IDOI in 7 - 10 business days. The license will be a 2 year license. You must complete 7 hours of continuing education prior to the expiration date of your license. Included in those 7 hours you must complete 1 hour of each of the following: RESPA, Ethics, Underwriting and Escrow. The Indiana Land Title Association holds 8 to 12 seminars every year so there are plenty of opportunities to complete your continuing education credit hours.
